I decided to do a second claim at [info]10_hurt_comfort</lj>  even though I haven't quite finished the first one yet.  I noticed they had some new prompt tables and thought I'd give another one a go.  Even though I've been writing, I haven't been doing a lot on my own so I thought this might be what I needed to get going writing by myself again.  So here's the prompt table I chose.  My claim for this is Quantum Leap - Sam Beckett (yeah, I know....you're soooo surprised).

1.  Flu/Cold2.  Intoxication3.  Collapse/ Fainting4.  Fever5.  Chicken Pox/Measles
6.  Appendicitis7.  Overdose8.  Poisoning (Including Food)9.  Headache/ Migraine10.  Poison Ivy

I live in Everett, MA.  This morning a gas tanker overturned releasing it's load of gasoline which ignited (http://www.boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/2007/12/a_fiery_river_o.html).  What's been described as "rivers of fire" flowed down the street.  Several buildings were destroyed leaving 12 families (many of them with small children) homeless.  Other than the clothes on their backs, these people have lost everything.

Additionally, approximately 40 vehicles were also destroyed because of the ensuing fires and an elderly complex had to be evacuated because of the danger.

Miraculously, no one was killed in this but many people have lost everything.  Not that there's any time of year that's good for this but now is particularly a bad time.  The weather here in Massachusetts is getting colder and it's just a few weeks until Christmas.

Funds have been set up to help the people who have lost everything in these fires.  I know everyone has their own charities that they like to give to and this is a time of year when everyone starts to get tapped out but, if you can spare a few dollars to help these people, I'm sure they'd be very appreciative.

WCVB (Boston area ABC affiliate) has information on the funds that have been set up.  You can access that information here:  http://www.thebostonchannel.com/news/14779250/detail.html

If you'd like me to add you to my friends list, please be sure to leave a comment and tell me who you are. I only add to my friends list people who have commented.

Before actually adding someone to my friends list, I do look at that person's journal and interests to see if it would "make sense" to friend them. Chances are, if I don't already know who you are or if we don't share any interests I probably won't add you to my friends list. It's nothing personal - I'm just choosy about who I add.

If you ever get tickets to be part of a test audience to preview pilots from a company called Television Preview, throw them away...burn them...recycle them...shred them...just don't use them!

I speak from experience.  Jean and I got the tickets and actually used them.  We didn't research it enough because if we had we would have known it was a scam...a big ol' scam.  The so-called "pilots" are so old it isn't funny.  They're at least 10 years old if they're a day.  One is a drama called "Soulmates" starring Kim Raver and Robert Knepper.  Bad doesn't begin to describe this thing.

The other was for a sitcom called "Dads".  Rue McLanahan was in it and Jean commented, as it was showing, that she hadn't changed.  Of course not.  It's so darned old.

The guy running it (who I thought should have been audtioning for a extra role on "The Sopranos") said that they'd be showing these "pilots" with commercials 'cause that's how we'd see them at home.  Uh, ever hear of TIVO where you can fastforward over them.  Or the "gee it's a commercial I think I'll go to the bathroom and get something to eat now".  That was something we weren't allowed to do during the two plus hours - it wouldn't have surprised me if they locked the doors so you couldn't leave.

The commercials, though, were rather...uh...dated themselves and one was a "trial".  It was actually kind of funny but wouldn't work today.  The Russian economy being bad doesn't have quite the punch it did about 5, 10, or more years ago.

But that was why we were really there...marketing.  First they made us fill out a booklet deciding what prizes we'd want if we won.  Basically, it was a thinly veiled survey.  They made us do another one of those again in between the two good awful shows.

Then there was the survey book.  It had one page of questions for each of the "pilots" shown then about 10 pages about what products we use, etc.  If I was asked one more question about Quaker Oats, I might have gone out to find the Quaker Oats guy and kill him.

I certainly wouldn't have minded being held captive in this room for this if they were up front about it....and compensated me for my time.  Otherwise, there's three hours of my life I'm never gonna get back.  If we'd been smart we'd have researched this company more than just their website before wasting our time.  If we had we would have found blog after blog after blog of people who experienced the same thing we did...and saw the same cheesy pilots.  Some of those blogs were dated five to seven years ago.

Talk about a total waste.  Oh well, live and learn I guess...and pass on the information to anyone else you can.

This got it's start back in 2004, I think.  I can't remember now where I actually saw it the first time.

Step One

- Make a post (public, friendslocked, filtered...whatever you're comfortable with) to your LJ. The post should contain your list of 10 holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fandom-related ("I'd love a Snape/Hermione icon that's just for me") to medium ("I wish for _____ on DVD") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV.") The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.

- If you wish for real life things (not fics or icons), make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) could get in touch with you.

- Also, make sure you post some version of these guidelines in your LJ, or link to this post (it'll be public) so that the holiday joy will spread.

Step Two

- Surf around your friendslist (or friendsfriends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list. And now here's the important part:

- If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use--or even know where you could get someone's dream purebred Basset Hound for free--do it.

You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf--to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not--it's your call.

There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.

---------------
1.  Look at my interests and use your creativity to surprise me with something.

2.  Look at my Amazon wish list and pick something there.

3.  Donate your time or money to a charity.

4.  If your a fan fic writer and like QL, I love stories that take place pre-leap (especially when they center on Sam).  I'd love to have some new reading.

5.  A month of my website hosting

6.  Kodak inkjet photo paper

7.  An upgrade for MS Frontpage

8.  High resolution pictures of Scott to use in my graphics

These last two are always on my list
9.  Remember to say "I love you" to those close to you - especially your parents.  Every year around this time I realize the void in my life left when my Mother passed away.

10.  I know it's corny but....Peace on Earth - which, incdentally was the last thing on my list to Santa every year when I was a kid.  I'm still waiting for him to be able to fit it in his sleigh.

Yeah, I know, I'm waaaay behind on the updates.  I haven't even updated last Monday in York, PA.  The whole purpose I write extensively about our trips is so I don't forget them.  Now to write about it to remember it in the future I'm gonna have to actually use the ol' memory and hope I don't forget anything.  I guess I could start there (and I guess I could break this long-assed entry into parts to make it easier.).

Monday Morning/Afternoon - November 22 - Gettysburg (if you're up for a little heebee jeebee stuff (even if it is after Halloween) this would be a good place to read )
